I pulled the fuel shut off cable apart the other day. Now I have to buy a new shut off cable assembly. I have been shutting the tractor off directly at the injector pump. I noticed that the shutoff lever is very hard to move. It looks like I would have to take the top of the injector pump off to get inside to see why its binding. I hate to start taking apart the pump as their are probably little parts to break or lose. I wonder if it would help to put some WD-40 to the shaft where it goes into the pump? anybody else had this problem? Suggestions?

WD40 might help. I have seen this happen before and have taken the cover off to clean the inside portion of the cover. Rust will gather in this area. This happens because the injection pump is lower than the fuel filter and water will settle to the lowest point because it is heavier that diesel fuel. That is why it is so important to change fuel filters more often when the injection pump is lower than the fuel filter.
You may want to take the timing cover off, (located beside the injection pump CAV tag), and pump fuel thru the injection pump to drain some of this water that may have settled in the pump. You will have to use the fuel transfer pump to do this, do not crank the engine while the timing cover is off.
You will need to locate a new gasket if you take the top cover off the injection pump. There is a slide type mechanism that the fuel shut off lever connects with that may have rust on it. This will cause the lever to bind and brake a cable. Tractors that have the solid rod type linkage do not cause as much of a problem.
If you take the cover off and reassemble the unit, it would be safe to disconnect the air intake hose at the manifold. This would allow you away to shut the engine off if something was incorrect in the injection pump. If the engine could not be shut down with the fuel lever, place a solid object, something like a wooden board, over the intake manifold to stop the engine. This cuts the air supply off so the engine will shut down. If the governor did not work correctly after reassembly, the engine RPM could be too high causing engine damage and the quickest way to stop the engine would be stopping the air supply.
Good luck ! It's not a big problem, just good training. Ralph
