I have a '79 M-F 20C. The hyd. pump control valve will move on its own to the full down position and stick there. It can be freed up by removing the side cover (with the response control) and nudging the valve linkage but will revert to the stuck position within an hour or so of operation. This happens even when the 3-point hitch is not being used and is in a middle position. The "reputable" shop that replaced the hyd. pump before I bought the machine (about a a year ago) says that the design is too complicated and no good. Is this fixable?

It sounds to me like I would question what they claimed to do to the pump when they rebuilt it. I have heard too many horror stories of people being charge for work that was never done. The reason I say this is their hesitancy to work on it now, and the reputation of the hydraulic pumps never being the problem except for being dirty. If they are hesitaint to make it right, they probably were hesitant to do things right except for charging you.
Have you drained the hrdraulic fluid and circulated diesel thru it yet? My mf35 was stuck in the up position, and I found the same results from the inspection hole. I drained fluid, added 3 gallons of diesel, and run the engine while at first manually moving the control valve thru the inspection cover hole. Once the valve was freed up, I used the position lever to raise and lower the lift repeatedly for 5 minutes to clean out the buildup. I drained ALL of the diesel, added new fluid, and now it is working great. If this fixes it, it was never cleaned when the work was done, as it takes many years for the buildup to occur on 'new' or rebuilt pumps.

If this doesn't fix it, it might be a faulty spring.

Thanks for the tips. I was looking for a method to flush the valve. I too question what was really done in the shop. Big Dean's site also has an item that a dirty valve will cause the 3-point to stick down. ...chuck
