I recently bought a 135 3 cylinder perkins diesel. Great tractor - but wouldn't you know it - after using it for about 3 hours, power steering fluid started leaking out around the steering column. the p/s is still working, but I don't know for how long!
Any ideas on what the problem might be - also would the repair be a do-it-yourself for an amateur mechanic?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

This is a very common, (small), problem with 135's with power steering. There is a small lip seal that will go bad. The seal is located in the tube section, lower portion, where the tube connects to the steering gear housing. There will be 4 cap screws connecting the tube to the steering housing, valve section. You will have to remove the steering wheel, disconnect the hood from the dash. You will have to raise the dash over the tube and this will require removing the bolts that secure the tube to the dash. Removing the battery will help you determine what other parts need to be disconnected. It's not a big deal installing the seal, but disconnecting the dash to remove the tube requires some extra work. Be careful removing the old seal. There is a bushing in the tube that allows the steering shaft to travel up and down in the tube. This up and down motion of the shaft controls the steering valve. Any nicks in the bushing will cause binding and make steering difficult. When you replace the seal and re-install the tube, start the tractor and test the steering using a pair of pliers to rotate the shaft to test the steering before replacing the dash. This will save time and work if the shaft is binding. If binding happens after installing the tube, remove the tube and polish the bushing. Good luck! Ralph

Before you replace the battery, check the small bolts on top of the steering case below the battery. These bolts become loose, and will cause damage to the steering case. Some bolts require an allen wrench, others require a screwdriver to tighten the bolts.

Are you sure it has power steering?
Two felt washers sit behand the steering box arms. The steering box takes a thicker oil than auto trans if it does not have power steering.

Yes, it definitely has power steering - although it is a different system from my first tractor; a massey 2135 gas. It had steering cylinders up front - with the pump on the left side. The 135 diesel does not have these cylinders, the pump is on the right side, and the steering "happens" with some kind of mechanism under the steering column.

Thanks for all the comments/suggestions. I start holidays next week - so will "tackle" this job then. I don't have net access at home, so will let you know how it went when I get back to work.

Cheers!
Grant
