I was cleaning the oil bath on my air filter and noticed that the steel wool-looking stuff up in the air cleaner was a little gummed up so I pulled it all out and cleaned it. It really wasn't that dirty, just the lower surface. My question: is this stuff a real pain to get back in the filter or was I doing something wrong? I got it all back in there but it took a LOT of pushing, wedging and cramming. It was like it grew once it got out of the cannister! Thanks for helping a tractor novice.

Bob,I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Wash the mesh in a pan of paint solvent(household solvent) first. Take a look at your filter housing and notice the size of the center pipe, then get a piece of hose of the same size, and with the mesh unrolled on a clean surface, roll the mesh up around the hose very tightly so it fits inside the housing, then put the hose against the center pipe and roll the mesh so it won't unravel and push it up into the housing at the same time. Worked for me!

Bob, There are two ways you can clean the filter mesh element without removing it. One is to soak it in a bucket of paraffin and the other is to blast it through with a hot pressure washer and let it dry off. I prefer the latter. The mesh is put into the filter casing under pressure which is why you had such a job getting it back in.
Regards, Pete.
