Does anyone have a magic bullet for removing
wheels/hubs from 81's, 20's, & etc. We normally
don't have to remove them but this one's gotta
come off. Also can you drive the key back through
the hub w/out swelling it? Thinking about making
a "gear" puller for it but am hesitant to break
the cast. ?help? - Alan

My MH30 has the cast rear wheels. Had to change the seals. It has threaded holes for a 3/4in puller. I got 2, 14in X 3in channel and welded them togeather with a 3/4
space between. I put 2, 3/4 threaded rods with nut through the space and put a piece of steel on the axle as a fulcrum to lay the channel. I tightened the nuts with a 24in pipe wrench
and a jimmy pipe for length. First I heated the
hub with a torch. The thing came apart after
some convincing and a few taps on the inside. The hub weighed around 120 I think. It's
pretty tough and takes quite a bit to crack it.
Avoid impact, but direct pressure shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks BlueLite! We adapted your puller idea.
The only holes in the hub are for the lug bolts.
What we did is: removed 4 inner bolts, small cast
and end shaft spring clip; shined up the shaft
(really in bad shape.); then ran 2 two foot x 1.5
in dia high temper rods (worn out jack hammer
tools) one above the axel, one below... ran a
chain around both then out over a 12 ton jack that
works on it's side which was at the end of the
axel. It took everything that jack had WITH the
assistance of a 5 pound maul. WE GOT IT!

Thanks again - ALAN

P.S. just read this and it's really confusing! We
made a 12 ton press and beat the snot out of the
hub to get it off. There, much simpler.
