We've had a 165 without Multi power forever and no
major probs. 2years on this (older style)
Multi-power 175 and it has been less reliable.
This problem has us beat: In High, up hill low
RPM's (600-1000) 3rd gear or higher: it will kick
out of high on it's own and won't shift back in
until about 1200-1300. Downhill or higher RPM's
it's fine. Rebuilt the main Hydraulic pump and
changed both of the internal filters (Hyd &
M-P)and oil about a yr ago. Any ideas? Friend
has a high pressure gauge and will test psi's
soon. Also; in the archives, there are a couple
references to defeating the multi-power (one said
4 bolts in the tranny, another said cut off teath
and weld gears together) any input on either of
these ideas? Any better ways? Would be happy
with a 6 speed tranny. Never needed more than that
with the 165. Thanks in advance - ALAN

Alan, I just finished fixing an MF-65 with the identical problem that you described. Here's what I did:
First, if you disassemble the hydraulic clutch pack you will most likely find very small notches worn into the teeth of the internal drive gear. (This gear costs over $1,000 new from Massey.) If there are notches, take a Dremel pencil grinder and a very small fine stone and polish each tooth until you cannot see the notches. This is time consuming, but very rewarding! This will allow the clutch discs to move freely on the gear while under load. The other areas of concern are the cast iron seal rings on the shafts and in the clutch pack and the spools in the spool valve. all of these items are necessary to deliver oil pressure to the clutch pack. Just replace them all, they're not too expensive. Also put a new pressure relief spring in the spool valve. Replace the three clutch discs while you're in there and my bet is that if you do all of these things, your Multi-power will work correctly again. In the most severe cases, there will be excessive wear in the seal ring areas and replacement parts begin to get expensive, but unless the machine is SEVERELY worn, the new rings should do the trick. Good luck and let me know how you come out.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I guess we'll have to
fix it again and hope for the best. Maybe this
time we'll get it right. Afraid to touch anything
we don't have to. Thanks again - ALAN
