MF 175 Transmission? Noise

I have a MF175 diesel, 1972 model, independent PTO, no multipower,2 range 4 speed transmission. It has only 2000hrs on it. Great machine. Recently noticed a noise like a bearing going, just guessing, but it only happens once in a while, usually while idling. It will come and go. If you shut down the engine and restart, the noise disappears. It doesn't matter whether you have the transmission in gear or in neutral or clutch in or out. I don't hear the noise at higher rpm, but it could be just not noticable above the general engine/exhaust noise. I really can't tell where the noise is coming from, so it could be anything from the power steering pump to the rear hydraulics. Shows you how much I know. I'd like to get an idea of what to look for before I have a shop tear it apart and go on a fishing expedition that will cost big bucks.

Any of you MF experts, like Big Dean, have experience with this kind of problem in 175s of this vintage?
