MF35 Rear engine seal and bearing

As I am replacing the clutch on a MF35 I thought I'd also replace the rear engine seal. It appears that two of the five bolts holding the bearing-seal retainer come from the inside out and only the top three come from the outside in. Does the pan have to be dropped to replace this seal? Some oil has leaked but not a large amount. I only want to replace the seal if it is convenient given the state of disassembly to replace the clutch.

You may not want to do this but I am a proponent of changing the front transmission seals when I do the clutch. The first reason is that these seals do go bad after twenty or so years. When you have the tractor split, it is fairly easy to repalce these seals as well. The other thing is that when you remove the main input shaft of the tranny to replace the seals, you can use the input shaft as a clutch alignment tool. After the clutch is back together, then replace the input shaft.

From past experience, the seal strips on the rear main bearing cap is where the leakage occurs, not the rear crankshaft seal. These seal strips are usually made of cork and usually go before the crankshaft seal. These seal strips are very cheap, you will have to remove the pan, and since there is already some leakage, this leakage will not stop until they have been replaced. Stopping the leakage will sure save the clutch.
