When the engine is running I get a steady stream of engine oil leaking from the weep hole beneath the bell housing area. (This is definitly crankcase oil and not transmission oil). What could be the cause of this?

Rear main seal is leaking. That's the purpose
of the hole, when you get a tranny or rear main
leak the oil runs out instead of building up
and getting into the clutch. It will need to be
split to fix.

Thanks for the info. I was told that it could be the pan gasket. How can one tell without splitting the tractor?
