Brake drum install on MF135

Bought replacement brake shoes to fix up the brakes in my MF135. Matched the part number in my parts book (RE 830-480-M92), but the holes didn't line up correctly - No problem that's what the drill press is for - and without further problem, I have them installed on the tractor.

Problem is now I can't get the brake drum back over the shoes. With the adjuster zeroed and all pieces in place, there is no way for the drum to slip over the shoes. I've tried every which way to get the drum on and there just isn't room for the shoes inside. Is there a trick somewhere I'm not catching - or could I have picked up an oversize set of shoes? I didn't have the drum turned since it was in good condition.

Anyone have an idea?

Thanks - Jeff

There are at least 3 types of brake shoes for the 135, including the unique UK version. I have a '72 135UK, and love it! The other major differences are the power steering system and fron axle, and the transmission on the later ones.

BTW, where did you find a parts book for the UK model??

Bob -

I figured that if the MF shop here had brake shoes on hand for a UK model 135, they probably could get me a UK parts manual too - so I asked the parts guy to look it up and he told me that he could get me one in a week to ten days. I still don't have it (will be a week Wednesday) but I expect he'll be able to get one if he was able to find a part number for the manual. Evidently they and the UK operator's manual are still available. We'll see. BTW, the shop manual is the same for both versions - only the operator's and parts manuals are different. - Jeff

Sounds to me that you have picked up the wrong shoes

have you checked on getting your oem shoe relined? check the yellow pages for clutch and break rebuilders. good luck.

The problem is solved. I have the right shoes for an MF135, but unfortunately, the tractor I have has turned out to be a MF135 (UK). I don't know what other differences there are, but if you have one and try to put US shoes on them, the drum won't fit... UK shoes are way expensive - about 4 times more than the US version.

A parts book and operators manual (UK) are available for this model and will be required for the continual cross-checking of parts numbers to ensure that this problem doesn't recur.

Thanks for the responses on the board and on email. Anybody have any experience with a Brit model 135? - boomer

There's usually a reason for holes not being where they're supposed to be. I'd guess you have a shoe that's real close but has more pad mateial than a 135 is supposed to have. Did you fit the shoes to the drum before you mounted them to see that they fit?

Externally (with the exception of the holes of course), the shoe base looked just like the original shoes. Obviously, there was more pad on the new shoes, but not so much as to make me wonder until after the fact.

The shoes are stamped RE 830-480-M92 (Taiwan) which matches up with the part number in my MF parts manual. I just assumed that since the shoe fits a number of MF (35, 50, 135, 150 230 et al) that the holes couldn't match up with all the different hubs. Sounds like it might be a $80 mistake. I'm going to take a shoe over to the MF dealer and compare them - AND order the right shoes for the tractor....

thanks - jeff

You may wish to compare part numbers at Bareco - most Australian MF135 were UK built. I have 2 odf them. Try Link which lists Aussie MF135 parts and may help to cross reference.
