Problem
Runs for awhile and quits like you turned off the key.
Let it sit for awhile and it usally starts.
Its getting worse, No spark when it does act up.
What would a person look at first? coil, condenser
Ignition switch? Please advise
Phil

I was told that your problem is often characteristic of a faulty condensor. Starts OK and runs until hot and then wham, nothing. Never experienced it myself but I have seen this same condensor response on the forums here a number of times with guys having the same problem. Good luck.

The first thing to look for is to check to see if you have voltage and ground at the coil. If no voltage on the "hot" bolt then: bad switch or wire (use frame for ground not other bolt). If no continuity from the other bolt to ground with the points closed then bad points or gap. (Make sure you do the 2nd test with the key off.) At no time should you touch your ohm meter or test light to the spark wire if it's in the tractor.

If the points are bad or just need replacing, change the condenser too; it is a very good suspect. As for the coil, I had one that went bad when someone else converted it to 12v but didn't change the coil. Went bad shortly after we bought it but it didn't do this. Could be heat related though and the coil is breaking down after it gets hot. How long is "a while"? One more idea: I had a set of ponts wear thru the pivot insulator and would periodically go to ground on me. Good luck - ALAN
