Having trouble getting my tractor to operate at top rpm's without twisting lever past normal positions. When I get it to open all the way up then it will not shut down to an idle.

Just done the engine and the govenor looked good. The only thing I see that's worn badly is the shaft in the carb that holds the butterfly valve. I put a kit in the carb but a new shaft was not in the kit. Can you get one anywhere? I think it has enough slop to cause my problem.

Alan: If you can't find a shaft, try taking it to a quality machine shop. I'll bet you can get one made. Ken

Alan: Try this. Place the throttle control lever in fast position. Then disconnect the rod at the carb. that attaches to the governor lever. Pull the rod to the rear while rotating the throttle shaft to the fastest position. The rod end should line up perfectly with the hole in the throttle shaft. If it doesn't adjust the rod so the length is perfect. Then place the throttle control lever in the idle position where the rod should push the governor lever all the way forward. If not make an adjustment to the rod near the right rear of the battery. Start the engine and test it. If this doesn't work you may have a broken or worn governor. Good Luck, Ken

I've had to run my throttle handle past the last notch for years to max the RPMs, but returning to idle hasn't been a problem. I have a hunch it is, like most of the linkages on these tractors, a function of wear on the rods in the linkage.
Is there a spring on the long horizontal rod thru the battery compartment on yours, and is there possibly crap in that area stopping the proper motion?
