Just returned home from looking over a pretty good looking tractor for 1 1/2 hours.

Has good sheet metal with no rust and no dents. Tractor hood has been repainted with all other paint original paint. Only fluid you can see is a little fuel around top of the fuel pump. No oil or hydraulic leaks. Has one set of remote hookups . Cranks easy and runs good. No smoke even when first cranked or no odd noises . Reacts well to throttle.

Checked all the fluid, lift, etc. Got on it and drove it around in most of the gears. No noise at all in the transmission or rear end. Has good rubber(75%).

Meter says it has 2900 hours. Seller is not the only owner and couldn't guarnatee the hours. Has good oil pressure. Bracket that holds alternator has been cracked and repaired. New alternator and battery.

Has WIDE rear tires 16-18 inches? Spin out rims.

Any idea about what it might be worth?

Fellow is asking $6250. He agreed to service the tractor with new oil and filter and new hydraulic fluid. Agreed to order me a 7 foot king cutter or Howse cutter at cost. Will deliver the tractor and cutter to me 50 miles away as part of the deal.

Fellow pointed out the minor items above to me when I asked him if he knew any problems.

1975 Diesel model has a 203 CID engine and 1976 Diesel has a 236 CID engine. The 203 is a very good engine in a MF 165, 3165, 302, 50A & B... but I am not sure it is as good in a MF-255. Apparently it generates more vibrations than the older 203 engine. If your MF 255 is really a 1976 model and has a AD4236 engine(the name plate should be on the manifold), it is better.

Does the tractor have wet brakes? If it does, not a bad price. Are the hydraulic remotes connected to the main hydraulic system or does the tractor have auxiliary hydraulics? I trade for a similar tractor in 1995, had 1800 hours then, has 2500 hours today, the battery is over 10 years old. The seller told me in '95 that the tractor only needed a battery. He installed a new battery in 1990. Have been oftered $9,000. Tractors with wet brakes and auxiliary hydraulics in high demand. Good luck!!!!

Brakes are wet. The remote hydraulics run off the main pump. There is no pump on the front of the tractor. It has never had a loader on it. The thread protector plastic plugs are still in the bolt holes where the loader mounts.

I checked the front in out good being a little concerned that it might have been a loader tractor. The tractor is very tight in the front end with no loose motion or excess wear.

The fellow did say it was his understanding that there were 2 pumps but they are inside the housing? I don't know about that deal. Why would it have 2 internal hydraulic pumps?

The main hydraulic and auxiliary pump are located inside the differential housing. The auxiliary is mounted directly above the main hydraulic pump within the differential housing. There should be a canister type filter located on the left side near the PTO lever that filters the oil for the auxiliary hydraulic system. The auxiliary hydraulic system allowed additional hydrualic power that is a seperate hydraulic system from the main. You can operate a loader on the auxiliary system and use the 3 point hitch at the same time. I use the system on mine for a hydraulic cylinder to replace the top link on the 3 point hitch. I can control the level of the implement attached to the tractor. Also installed a hydraulic cylinder on a New Holland 451 rear mower to operate, (raise and lower the cutting bar), works great. Even attached a log splitter. Well worth every penny. Good luck !!!

I really appreciate you taking the time to fill me in. As you can tell, I don't know a lot about this specific tractor. I've heard this is a good tractor but my past experience has been with an 8N Ford. I now find myself in need of a bigger tractor to keep 60 acres hogged down with and do some heavier work.
