After an uneventful day of brushhogging (with almost no shifting) the shifter on my MF 35 (Perkins diesel)would not budge out of second gear. The high/low shifter moves fine. The shifter can be depressed a little bit but it won't budge out of second. I was able to roll it into the garage but now I need to know if this is a job for a real tractor mechanic or if there is a relatively simple fix.

This is normal for MF's. This happen when the gear shift lever happens to be pulled upward while shifting gears. The end of the gear shift lever will get out of the slot that is cut into the shifter rod. It is important to push downward while shifting. All direct drive transmission, autos, trucks, tractors, even bulldozers, have this problem. To get your 35 shifter unstuck, remove the transmission filler plug, located on top left of transmission, 1 1/16" wrench needed. Looking down into the transmission, on a six speed you will see two forks, on a eight speed three forks. For second gear, which is easy to unstick, take a long screw driver or small pry bar, and move the forks. The way the dents are placed in the shifter rods, you will only be able to move the fork, the gear, that is engaged. When you move the fork, this will disengage the gear, and the gear shift lever will go back into the slot. You may have to move the gear shift lever some, but once you have done this you'll have no problem. When the transmission is in netural, the slots on all the shifter rods will line up. You will need to put the plantery, high/low, in netural. This will help in taking the load off the engaged, stuck gear. Good luck!!!!!
