Have 285 Massey w/318 Perk and CAV pump. Excessive knock sound at low speed espicially when cold and not under load. Sound comes directly from upper engine block in #3 cyl. area when listening with stethoscope. Does not sound like valvetrain, and will quieten out after warm and under load, but will return when ideling.
Replaced pump with rebuilt unit at overhaul just over 100 hrs. ago, and noise has been there since then. Tried retarding pump with little success or effect on noise. Otherwise, it runs fine with minimal smoke and good power.
Can one line on pump be over advanced? What would be the effect of a piston installed backward?

You may have a bad injector. I have been told that if they are not spraying correctly they cause a loud knock.
