I inherited a M-H Pacer that sat for years in the SW Desert of Arizona. The transmission plug was
missing and moisture along with other things found their way into the tranmission housing and final drive. There is surface rust on some of the teeth in final drive. Someone drained the gear
oil and all that was left was some stringy substance on the bottom of the final drive unit. I spayed WD40 into the gears. They turn freely with no resistance btu my question is what else should I do short of disassembling the rear end to clean up the gears. Anything besides WD40 to clean it up?

Bob, if it were my tractor I think I'd fill the transmission with some kerosene or diesel and turn those gears slowly, very slowly, and then drain and repeat 2 or 3 times. There's no telling what sand or grit got in there. Get the bad stuff flushed out of there best you can. good luck
