I just replied to a message on rust removal that I think is very helpful so I thought that I would post it again separately. I also wanted to add a caution to my previous post.

THIS CHEMICAL WILL DISSOLVE RUST, IT SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING THAT IT WILL ALSO DISSOLVE EYEBALLS AND OTHER SENSITIVE TISSUES. USE EYE PROTECTION AND WEAR CLOTHING.

The solution that I use is Muriatic acid. This is swimming pool acid. You can get it anywhere where swimming pool supplies are sold. This is the best rust remover that I have used and it is only about three buck a gallon. I use it undiluted and the rust will be completely disolved within a couple of minutes. If you dilute 50/50 with water it works slower and gives you more control of the process. If the rust is deep, soak for about two minutes then wash in water then repeat. To use on sheet metal before painting, I spray it on with a high quality plastic spayer. The only drawback is that you MUST get this stuff removed from any cracks or crevices or from between mating parts. DO NOT FORGET AND LEAVE THE PART SOAKING. On complex parts, I soak, rinse, soak, high pressure/hotwater wash and then soak in diesel to preserve. Try it and you'll be impressed. Bob

They also use it to etch concrete surfaces to get the glass finish you see in warehouses.

I agree it's great stuff. I used it to clean out the water jackets on my tractor motor. If
you do it, you have to replace the pump with a sheet metal flange and gasket as I think it would eat out the shaft. Same goes for projections in the block like brass temperature sensors and such.
Make sure the radiator is disconnected and outlets are blocked.

Flush out with cold water after 5 min and you should see the gunk that comes out.

My brother-in-law needs to remove the oxidation from his tank on his 35. Can we drain it, fill it with water to let the fumes out, let it sit for a few days to devaporize, and use this stuff? Or will it have an adverse effect with gasoline residue?

I have not used this inside of fuel tanks before but I think that it would work out alright. I would drain the tank and then flush with water. Then I would use a diluted 50/50 solution. I would then flush again well with warm soapy water. Many of these tanks have rust pockets in the bottom where water has settled over the years. After cleaning your tank thouroghly, I would use a sloshing fuel tank sealer to seal and preserve the tank. Otherwise you may run into leakage problems down the road. The sealer is sometimes hard to find but I get mine at a radiator shop that works on fuel tanks as well. You may also find tank sealer at a good auto restoration place as well. Good luck
