Does anyone know a sure fire way to get the valves set. I have gone thru the manual and tractor runs good. She smoke a bit until she is warmed up. I read somewhere about using a degree wheel mounted to the crank. How often should they be adjusted ( after a complete overhaul). Manual is hard to follow on valve adjustment, and timing, or maybe the 23c is kinda tricky.

Matt,
The valve clearance is not so critical so as to require a degree wheel. If you want to get the valves just perfect, adjust the valves when the piston is at TDC. Rotate the engine so that the number four cylinder rocker arms are both rocking (exhaust closing, intake opening)The number 1 piston is at TDC, then adjust the no. 1 valves. Then rotate till no.1 valves are rocking and adjust no.4. Then do cyls 2 and 3 the same way. The Standard 23C engine just smokes when it is cold. I have two of them.
