Looked at a 44 M-H today. SN on the engine had some letters and 2600 which makes it a 48 model. It has a single wheel front. Appears to be complete but has a bad 4 cylinder engine. Head was pulled years ago and the block was left unprotected. It's froze up and I can see a hole in one of the sleeves. Wendel's big book said that the 4 cyl was an H 260 engine built by M-H. Looked at the price of an overhaul kit on this web site and was suprised at the differance in cost between the 4cyl and the 6 cyl continental engine. I must be missing something. Always wanted a 44 but a bad engine sure scares me. It appears to have live Hyds and a three point that looks as if it was installed after the tractor was placed in the field. The fwd end of the hyd cyl is welded on the tractor. Kind of a bad weld job.
Thanks for any comments.

Wayne,
I have a '51 MH 44 GR. Montes Equipment in Chicago specializes in Obsolete Continental parts. I was able to purchase a complete rebuild kit of original part (still in cosmoline) several years ago from them. The engine is really easy to rebuild as the sleeves are wet and are easy to remove and replace. If you have the main caps and they are in good shape, the crank is in good shape or can be reground, and the head is capable of being redone, it is a great engine.
All of the other engine parts are available used or aftermarket.

BTW, I use my 44 on my horse farm all the time. The 3 Pt is an aftermarket. As far as I know, MH did not have a 3 point option for the 44.
Hope this helps.
Paul

The serial number for the tractor is not on the block. The serial number is on the left rear of the frame, under the battery, or on top of the rearend up by the pto. It should start 44GR and then a number.
