I have a 165 with a 203 Perkins diesel engine. The generator is shot (bad armature). Its $85 for a rebuilt one plus they recommend a new regulator ($35) to be installed at the same time. I don't really care for generators and would just as soon install a modern alternator set up with a built in regulator. The problem is the generator is located on the right side of the engine sort of "down in a hole" with a casting right next to it. There is just enough room for the generator, but not enough room for an alternator as they are larger in diameter. The alternator would have to be mounted way out from the engine with a real long belt. I looked at some other MF 165's at our local dealer, but they all had generators too. Does anyone out there know of any 165's with a reasonable looking alternator set up and if so how would it be done? Is there any such thing as a "skinny alternator" that could be mounted right where the generator is? Any help would be appreciated.

I have always had good luck having my generators rebuilt, we have a local electric shop that does excellent work. If your tach cable mounts to the back of the generator you will have to somehow deal with that if you do an alternator swap. You might take a look at the later models to see how they mount,255,275,etc., might could buy what you need from a salvage yard. I'd keep the generator, they are dependable and $120 ain't too bad., just ain't worth swapping in my opinion.
