Hi guys; I am new to this forum because I happen to be one of those JD guys. I'm sure MF machines are great, I just don't happen to have any at this time. My friend who is a "part time" farmer has a MF 175D. He loves it but has trouble starting it in cold weather. He is not aware of a starting procedure for cold weather. Should he turn the key to the "run" position for a few minutes before trying to start it or what?
Thanks in advance for your help! Tugboat

I have a MF 165 with a perkins diesel, it will start down to 0 degrees F, with no starting aids. I have started it at 35 degrees below zero, after being plugged for an hour. A tank or block heater will provide all the help you will ever need for starting a perkins diesel. The manufacturers do not recommend using ether with a perkins engine.

I have a 165D and live in Connecticut (gets COLD here...). I have an antifreeze immersion heater and just plug it in for about 45 minutes on the coldest morning. She starts like a breeze every time.

Try to be very careful with the Starting Fuel. I found out the hard way that Perkins Diesel's do not tollerate Starting Fluid much at all. It will break all the compression rings and or the pistons if abused. Massey's are great tractors, and so are the Perkins engines, just have to know how to treat them. Will give you excellent fuel economy and long life if treated well. Leo

My 175 Diesel has 2 plugs for heating the engine,
1 heats the antifreeze, the other the oil (I'm
pretty sure). Although I live in TN and it doesn't
get so cold here heating it always does the trick.
My key switch has no position other than start and
is spring loaded to off. If your friend's 175
doesn't have the plugs I'm sure you can get a
retrofit kit from the local Massey dealer. Good
luck...Bob
