I acquired what I am told is a 1941 Massey Harris today (sight unseen). The tractor was found by a friend of mine and is about 300 miles from my house. It has a broken camshaft and the engine is apart.
I have been looking around a little for more info on it but haven't found too much. I have a few questions, maybe someone could help me out.
Was there more than 1 model made in 1941?
What size engine and HP?
Does it have a 3 pt hitch?(probably not, right?)
What about hydraulics?
Are broken camshafts common on this tractor?
Are there any pictures of this year and model on the WEB?

I won't be able to go get it for another week. I'm curious to know what it looks like.
Thanks for your help.
Joe R

In 1941, Massey 101 and 102 Juniors had 4 cylinder Continental engines, probably 124 cubic inches (flathead). Later, the same engine showed up in 140 and 162 cubic inch displacements. The blocks were the same though. If it is a Senior or Super model, it is likely a 206 or 230 cubic inch 6 cylinder Chrysler engine. The 201 models used a Chrysler 251 cubic inch unit. Then in 42, the Seniors and Supers switched to a Continental 226 cubic inch flathead of 6 cylinders. Get the guy to find the plate with a serial number on it and phone your. It should be riveted to the cast iron tub on the left side. The Juniors and Seniors used the same chassis, tranny and differential I believe. Post the serial number here and I'll tell you the model and the year for sure (from my serial number list). Meanwhile, 300 miles is a hell of a long way to go for a junker that might have numerous other problems, ie. transmission etc. If you do get it (is it for free?) consider searching around for another engine. I think some of the combines used the 6's while there are lots of the 4 cylinder motors on old Lincoln welders and they should be easy to find.

Sandy,
Thanks for the feedback. I talked to the guy today for a minute. The tractor is a 4 cyl. and in fair condition. I didn't get the serial number from him. Yes, the tractor is basically free, it was a horse trading deal that worked out good for everyone. I will be able to repair the engine for the price of the parts. I teach automotive at a state college and have access to everything I'd need to do it. It sounds like engine parts will be pretty easy to come by, so I will probably rebuild it not simply replace the camshaft. It also has a plow on the front of it that is lifted manually by a lever. I'll post the serial number when I get it.
Thanks again,
Joe R

I am in the process of restoring a Massey Harris 101 Sr. These were made in 1941 (Before and after, not sure of the exact years), Mine the casting date on the housing says 1942, I cannot get the exact year because the serial number Plate is gone. The Senior model had a 6cyl engine in it, they had either a chrysler or a continental engine in them. Massey also Made a Jr. Model with a 4cyl Continental. These do not have hydraulics or a three point. There might be others made in 1941, but I am not sure of that. If it is a 101sr. and it is too far gone to restore I am looking for Parts for Mine.

How do you Like the Ford 871, I redid a 971 SOS last year. It is a nice tractor.

I like the 871 SOS a lot. It has much more power than my Jubilee which is nice when mowing deep grass. The low gearing and live PTO makes it possible to run a roto-tiller and snow blower. I haven't seen the SOS trans to be as troublesome as others have. Maybe they don't survive abuse as well as the other transmissions.

Hi Brent,
Thanks for the info. It is supposed to be in decent shape but I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully it is restorable because I am looking forward to working on it. I've fixed up a couple of Fords (a Jubilee and an 871 SOS), and a few old stationary motors but never any other tractors.
