I am looking to purchase my first tractor. (for mowing and general work on 5 acres)

I have been reading EVERYTHING I can about small tractors and have noticed that the major brands are all very competitive in pricing for machines with similar specifications. (example, 25-30 HP machines from NH, JD, and Kubota)Machines in this class seem to be matched to 5' mowers and 5' box blades.

Then I notice that for substantially less money, I can get a brand new MF-231 (45HP diesel?), with a 6 foot mower and 6' box blade and 16 foot Tilt-Trailer for $14,800! This is being advertised at a dealer that is supposedly the biggest MF dealer in USA.

My question is propably obvious now. How can you purchase so much more power from MF for the same price than the other major brands? Is the MF231 inferior to a NH 29TD or Kubota 2400?

Thanks for any help. I am really pumped about getting my first tractor! I can't wait!

TAFE makes the same tractor in orange. Imported from a different corner of the world, and must be made by slave labor, cause it costs even less. Never owned one or seen one or sold one, so don't start writing raising cane, all I know is there are virtually the same.
People tell me it all has something to do with supply and demand, and to study the forgien exchange rates.
Go figure. Tom S.

Does the TAFE have a Perkins engine? I looked at a TAFE and at 100' it looked like a 231 but up close there seems to be differences.

Tafe's are made in india, looks like a MF, come off the same line as MF. Some componets are are the same, others are not ie. MF uses CAV fuel system, Tafe uses Bosch. MF front end is cast iron, Tafe is pressed and welded steel. We considered tafe, but bought MF. The 231 is MF's value verison, Still using most of the same componet from the 35's and 135's. Good luck on getting your first Tractor!!!!

The MF 231 is 34 PTO. I bought one 6 years ago and have had very good luck. I have a heavy duty Ford bushhog and it handles it very readily. All other uses have also been very satisfactory.

It has 187 hours, I have had to replace the temp gauge, one grease fitting, and the dim lights do not work. Other than that it has been very good.

The power steering works very good and the hydraulics are strong. It has a reliable Perkins engine thathas many years of proven performance.

If you have any questions e-mail me.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I have learned much more about tractors in a short time from you guys. As for the 231, it has been replaced with the 231S and is basically the previous 240! A bit more horsepower too! (41 PTO). I ordered mine yesterday! Have recieved email from a MF mechanic that has serviced tractors for 27 years. He felt I would be very pleased.

As for the pricing, it seems there are few thrills with these machines. Just solid engineering and "basic" workhorses. I can't wait to hook up do some real work!

The 240 is(was) offered in two models a 240 and 240S and they were not the same tractor.

I could have my facts a little mixed up. I have crammed too much in too fast.

The way I had it explained to me was that the 231 (The polish built machine) was actually a bit unique in many of its parts that the other 200 series tractors had in common. Although it's owners have been pleased with it, it has been discontinued and replaced with the 231S. When I asked one dealer what were the differences, he said the 231S was very close to the same machine as the 240. Not to be confused with the 241S, which is a new model too. The 241S seems to be the 231S with hydraulics and 2 more horsepower. Cost about a 1000.00 more here than the 231S.

Been wondering all day if I should call and change my order to the 241S!

If I am far off base, please let me know.

All of the sourced MF tractors seem to be a good deal price wise.I recently looked at a Mfd 281(67hp) which I could have purchased for $23,000 Cdn.Yes they are a bare bones work tractor, but they are real tractors. If you can live with out the creature comforts, and lack of extensive options list, than these tractors are for you.

The Polish 231 is the latest version of the Mf35 diesel. If parts are being more standardized with the 240, that is a very good thing. Replacement parts due to line changes for the 231 have been problematic at times. Steering parts were a problem for some friends of mine. By standardizing with the rest of the line MF will have eliminated the problem. The basic tractor is hard to beat.
