I have a TO-30 which I bought with a hole in the block. Found a new block, bought a kit, had the crank, rods, and head machined, re-used the cam and lifters and put it back together using the I&T and original Ferguson manuals. It runs, but not well... acting like its got a miss. Pulling either the #1 or #4 plug wire kills the motor immediately, regardless of engine speed. Pulling #2 or #3 seems to have no effect. When I installed the distributor I (thought) had #1 at TDC on compression stroke. Sound like the distributor is 180 deg. off? What else might be wrong? Sorry about the length of this message and thanks!

Is it gas or diesel? A Perkins diesel has 3 Cylinders, Standard has 4, Continental I believe would only be gas.

Maybe you could use the engine numbers, and check with a dealer.

Hi Matt,
This may be obvious to some but - the length of the bar is adjustable in the same way that a turnbuckle works.

Re: IDENTIFYING MASSEY FERGUSON TRACTOR YEAR AND MODEL in reply to K-MAN, 12-02-1999 20:39:18
Good morning.

Looks like a Perkins A4-318 engine. My Vapormatic book lists that engine used in the 285, 595 and 1080. The A4-318-2 engine was used in the 298 and 698. These are European models; other US model numbers may have used the same engines.

There should be a serial number plate somewhere on the unit - the earlier ones were located in front of your knees as you sat on the seat.

Parts should be available through this site, from YT or Walt's. Manuals are also listed, from the link at the top of the left column on this page. You will need the tractor model, though.

Canadian prices on parts may be lower because of the low Cdn dollar. For example, a water pump is $139-$166 US, depending on the tractor.

Hope this helps.

Jack
