My MF 165 Dieselis hard to shift and grinds when going into gear in either the H or L range of the transmission. How are the MF 165 transmissions in the long run and are there any common problems with this gear box? Any suggestions on these transmission

The gear boxes on Massey Fergusons are generally trouble free. However, to get a smooth gear change, double your clutch.

I have a 165 gas, which has had that problem before. The clutch has some adjustment on the outside, which is the first thing I would try. if not, send it in to a massey dealer if there are any located near you, and have a new clutch put in. Mine is on it's third or fourth clutch since I've had it

Mind if I ask what it cost you to have a new clutch put in?

A few years back, I think the total bill was about 1200, but I had a few other things done to it. I think the clutch was about 700, but i'm not sure.

Itīs clutch, for sure.

Transmission works properly even if itīs old.
My 165S (1972) has already run more than 10000 h without gearbox problem. Only what I have is some little problem with hydraulic.

I have a MF150 Diesel with the same problem. Pretty sure it's the clutch but I'm kind of afraid to tear into it. Let me know if you get it resolved...I like to learn from other peoples experience (good or bad)!

look to your clutch, the transmissions are fairly bombproof
