Hi Gang! This is the latest installment of the MF50 overhaul project that I have alluded to in the previous chapters. Now it seems that with the 2nd. major overhaul kit installed that the old machine starts and performs ok on the Dyno. There is only one small problem and that is the 4th. head gasket still leaks a significant amount of oil on the back side of the engine. Various torque settings and temperatures have been tried to no avail. The mechanic suggests now that I take the head to a machine shop and have the thing surface planed and checked for cracks. He said I should spring for a genuine Perkins head gasket, which I have, to the tune of forty dollars. Massey is very proud of their genuine parts. The mechanic is perhaps more frustated than I, if indeed, that is possible. This project switched from a routine overhaul into a horror story with every assembly. I now worry that the boltheads will wear off before the job is finally completed. The dealer would not agree to any more parts after the 4th head gasket and 2nd. overhaul kit he furnished, I am sure the labor is unreal. I will keep everyone posted when I finally get the Massey HOME.

This is starting to look like a very strange case, have you talked to others in your area that have had this same dealership overhaul their tractors??? I can't believe that they are having so many problems, and won't stand behind their work. In my opinion, they should be taking the responsibility of checking out all engine parts before re-assembly??? If you knew everything that you needed to do to rebuild the engine, I'm sure that you would have saved the money and done it yourself??? Are these kind of problems common with their work???? Let us know what happens and good luck!!!

What brand of engine kit was installed? Massey engine parts are supposed to be Perkins.

I too thought that checking head and block would be standard procedure for an overhaul.I 've only overhauled autos though ,thank the Lord after hearing of your experience, and may not be in "tune" with the tractor scene.I hope everything works out for you!
