Hello again to all that have read the previous chronicles about my MF50 overhaul project disaster. Just maybe It will have a happy ending, the dealer called today and stated the machine is ready to go. So now after two complete engine overhaul kits, two oil pumps, five head gaskets, a head milled flat by 15 to 20 thou, complete clutch assembly, rebuilt starter, rebuilt generator, rebuilt radiator, and untold hours of work for the mechanic and $2100 on my part I have my dad's old Massey MF50 home. The dealer, mechanic, and I did apologies all around and I drove off on my Massey into the Tennessee Mountains. Many thanks to everyone who gave advice, I passed on many comments to the mechanic that did the work. The mechanic always looked quizzically at me as if to say "how does he know anything about these tractors". The Internet works.
At any rate, The old Massey runs great, pulls good and has no leaks yet

Bob -

Satisfying, ain't it!

The old girl should be good for another generation now.

Problems like this are rare with Perkins, even rarer with the older MF's, but they do occur.

I commend both you and your shop for your positive, mature handling of a possibly very messy situation. You are fortunate to have such a responsible business to help you.

A question - did you find any conclusive explanation for the initial failure?

Thanks for the comments:
The mechanic is very upset with himself for not having a better handle on the problems. I think he thinks he messed up somewhere but is unsure of anything conclusive. Some of the explanations from the guys on the forum were probably very close to the facts. I think the closest to the problem was an improper installation of the sleeves causing two of them to be elliptical in shape. There were tense moments all around. I agreed to pay for anything NEW that had not been tried, but not for replacements of same parts. I will start the sandblasting and painting part of the project when I replenish the coffers a bit.
