Just got my steering cylinder back from the shop yesterday after having it rebuilt-Can you beleive it?! over $300 for a rebuild! thank god i didnt buy a new one-over $700! anybody else have this problem on these tractors? had the other one rebuilt this summer when the balljoint popped out of the threads on the cylinder. same thing with both of them actually, exept the first time it broke while on a neighbors farm, and I couldn't drive it home. My 285 has approx. 5100 hrs on it and is used for heavy feild work all year long-anywhere from working over the fall plowing to cutting and baling hay with my massey 12 baler. I love the tractor dearly, but i guess i just gotta vent from the high expense. I plan on taking 2 weights off the front, but i need the rest for feildwork. I currently have 4 suitcase weights, with a large round peice of concrete with a pipe through the middle. have a bolt going through the pipe to hold it on the weights, but the pipe also supports all the weight because it is sticking out of the weight about 3" on each end. works nice but i might need to take it off when it ain't needed. Its almost as bad as having a loader on it
