our MF135 did the same except it stuck in reverse. We removed the cover and just knocked the selector cogg into the correct position and shes never done it since.

This is common when the shifting parts are worn. The problem can usually be avoided by not pulling up on the lever when shifting, and by shifting slowly when moving from a gear on the right(2-3) to one on the left(R-1).

My MF35 has stuck twice in 2nd in the month or so that I've owned it. My friend who I bought it from who restores tractors says that's not uncommon in these MFs and some IHs and can be caused by shifting too soon before everything has stopped turning. He says what Chris C. said - screwdriver through oil filler hole to slip gear back. However, last weekend, another friend fixed it in a different way - drove over some rough ground, bounced and heard it click back in. :) I think the first time it stuck for me, that's what fixed it since I didn't do anything else but continue working in 2nd on some rough ground.

You may be able to free it by using a large screwdriver through the trans/hyd filler cap port. Check Big Deans web site for details. This is pretty common on older Massey fergusons with some play in the shifter sockets
