My diesel 165 is running Rottella 30 W in mild California year round. Problem is I start it and drive for 30 mins or so and the pressure is up nicely in the 3/4 position then it fades to the less than 1/4 position and holds there while I working some ground with the roto tiller and decent rpms. I drive back and the oil is still in the less the 1/4 position. I check the oil for diesel by smelling it but no diesel I can detect. Is it time for a new oil pump and how big of a job is it? Needless to say I keep an eye on the pressure guage all

First of all i'f check that you haven't got a fualty oil pressure guage. If it is an old original smiths dial, i would change it and put a new one on. If you are still getting the same reading, it will; prbably be the oil pump which is getting tired. Its a big job to replace one, it involves taking all the tin work off and takes time. However, if you do need a new oil pump, don't get one of a non runner, its not worth the hastle of taking it off and putting it back on your tractor, only to find out that its useless. Its best in the long run to buy a genuine Perkins part, it will be under guarentee and you will know the history of it.

Bearings will probably be just as big a culprit. If you go if for the pump, check the main and rod journal dia's and clearances.
