Has anyone converted a narrow front 44 special into a wide front. I would like to do this if it is not too much trouble. Would I also need to replace the complete steering mechanism? Any info would be appreciated.

Chuck,
Careful of your words. A M-H 'standard' 44 is a
low-profile model, with 30" rear wheels and a fixed width, cast front axle, along with large
elephant ear fenders. Unless you have a shift
guide plate over your gear shift boot, you do
NOT have a Special. Your S/N may contain an 'S'
but it means 'standard'. All Special S/N's begin
with 5, followed by 4 digits(44S GR58092). Know
your tractor before buying parts. I would avoid
all after market WFE's, always some compromise.
Good luck.

We are talking row crop, not standard 'wide' axles? This will go smooth if YOU remove the adjustable wide front end, from a genuine Special,
not a bundle of parts off a classic'regular' 44.
Since the Special had a U-frame 3/8" thicker, the
pan brace is wider, thrust washers different. I
advise using the WFE steering box, less stress,
thus, less parts wear. The 6 bolt support should
bolt up nicely. The numerous bushings, bearings,
probably need replacement in the WFE. Most were
undergreased, loosened up. Tie rod ends also get
loose. After market, like Tisco, can get MF 35 and Ferguson 40, which are close fits. Good luck.

The tractor I have is not a rowcrop, so I don't think I would need a rowcrop wide front.
Thanks for the usefull info on the 44 special being a little different than a standard 44. I will keep that in mind when I start shopping.

I have a 44 special wide front, I have converted it from a narrow, but I didn't no use the orginal massy harris wide front. IF everything goes ok it is not hard at all. do you have a wide front already. matt

Did you use some kind of generic front end kit or did you adapt some other brand of wide front?
I am still in the consideration mode, I haven't started looking for a wide front yet, I am trying to decide if I should just buy a wide front or a whole wide front parts tractor probably with a bad motor so I can get it a little cheaper.

I got the tractor and it had a different narrow front on it and came with an aftermarket wide front. I want to say it is a Speaily , I don't know if that right. I do know about 20 miles away from where I live there is a guy with a 44special parts tractor with an orginal wide front, cast rims and weights. I stop a year ago and he was in the process of restoring his other 44 special and would sell the tractor until he was finished. Now he is done an it just sits there. The orginal front would make the tractor worth more, that is why I always wante it, but haven't taken time to do it. matt
