Hi I am looking at buying a Massey Harris 44D. I want it for use not just show. Is it likly to be more costly and trouble than it's worth? I live in Maine and how well do they start with an engine heater? My dad had one when I was home on the farm in Nebraska and it broke it's crank shaft. The man said this one runs and starts well? Please help Massey experts. Thanks Tony Ceder

The 44D would be cheaper to operate than the44G.I would put a circulateing block heater on the engine. They will start ok if the coolant is kept warm.If it is warmed up to temp before working it in the cold and is properly maintained it should last a long time.If you purchase the tractor check the rear-end oil for any water. If the gear shift boot is cracked there is a good chance there will be water in the bottom of the rear-end.Hope this helps you.Bruce C.
