Need Tractor....suggestions?

I just bought 50 acres in Erath Cty, Texas. Many mesquite/cedar saplins to clear to reestablish pasture.

Currently borrowing a 2WD 231 w/ brush hog on 3-point, has front loader, from my father in law. Works pretty well, maneuverable!, but plan to split 10-15 acres to cultivate/bail hay. I'm thinking I need a larger tractor to pull the baler.

Have experience baling hay, Farmall 504, & 966, but not very familiar w/ Massey's ID's. Low profile will probably be better to mow around Post Oaks/Live Oaks/Elms, but cannot afford TWO tractors.

Thanks!

If you can ,keep borrowing your father in law's 231 for raking and brushhogging and get a massey ferguson 165DIESEL(50 hp)or if you cant get a 165,go with a ford 4000 or ford 5000(diesel if possible)for the habine, squarebaler, and other equipment. However,if you are talking about a round baler you should go with a tractor that has at least 75 hp.good luck.

Al those two tractors you mentioned seem to me a little overkill for a square baler you did not say if you will be round or square baling. The 231 Massey is plenty large enough to bale square hay with.My two cents.

the 504 you spoke of is about 46 hp.same class as 165 massey, D17 or 170 allis,5000 ford the 966,100 hp. class 1100 massey,200 or 7000 allis 8600 ford. the tractors with hand clutch (POWER DIRECTOR)works real well on square bailers, hope this helps Gordon-(TN)
