I recently aqcuired a piece of land which will need some maintenance. I'm looking for a old tractor which I want to restore and use. Not for a living but for the fun. I 'm lucky to have been offered 2 MF, in (very much)used condition but running. Both are diesels from the end '50ties, early 60ties.The one is a 3cylinder and I'm told it's a MF35, the other a 4 cylinder, made in the UK and which looks quite similar. My gues it is a TO35.
Someone told me the 4 cylinder engine is not reliable and should not be touched, at the other hand, the 3 cyl is the one to have, and will keep on running.
My question is therefor: if above statement is right: what is the weakness of the 4 vs. 3 cyl. and why? What in particular should I look after before aqcuiring one of these?
In my case, which one is the one to take home?

Many thanks in advance... Werner

The main problem with the 4 cylinder always was that it was hard to start. It is legendary for that. The 3 cylinder starts easy.

go for the 3 cylinder. i have a 4 cylinder, very hard and difficult engine. although many 4 cilinder engines are still alive here in belgium. i only met 2 guys who like the 4 cylinder, and one of them is a very good and old technician who likes to work on his old tractor. and nobody is complaining about their 3 cylinder mf35 or 35x.

Go with the 3 cylinder Perkins.

The tractor made in the UK is not a TO30. Only the TE and FE35 series was made in the UK. The TE stands for Tractor England. It is more than likely a FE35, the four cylinder diesel before the MF35 was produced. The MF35 has a three cylinder perkins I think. I would personally go with the MF35.
