My dad recently purchased this tractor not knowing very much about ANY tractor and would like any info we could find. Its a high crop and other than not finding parts for this tractor this is about all we know. Is this tractor rare or just being this old is why we cannnot find parts?? ANY help would be great!!! Thanks!

Douglas, hope this helps. The 85 was Massey's big tractor which was built by Massey. (MF 95, 97, 98 were built by outside contractors). It was and is a solid 4 plow tractor and the big brother to the 35, and 65 series. The man who wrote the owners manuel for the 35, 65, and 85 still works as an Agco employeee in Georgia. (just a little trivia) The 85 came in LP, gas, and diesel. It is getting rarer as more are scrapped. But, you would be surprised at the number of farmers who just won't let go of them, and surprisingly these are still capable of a full days work. Most were shipped to the mid West, and Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, some to Canada. About 50% of parts are still available through Agco. Some independent machanics can also still get some parts, gaskets, etc. If you have specific questions, please ask and we will answer them.

All,
I am looking at an MF85 in upstate NY, which has a heavy duty loader and is being offered for $4200. While I'd really like a ~20 HP 4WD compact diesel, this big 60 HP 2WD would probably do all I needed... but before I bite, I too am concerned about parts! There is nothing catastrophically wrong with the beast (big tractor for a former "N" owner). It runs OK. No smoke. But there is an oil leak somewhere on it that is running down the back left side of the engine. I don't want problems I can't fix. Should I stay away? Please answer ASAP, as I money is burning a hole in my pocket!

Paul, My mechanic just got a complete head gasket set for my tractor. Can't really advise you on how fixable the leak is, and don't know how much time and effort you are willing to put into the fix. I really enjoy my 85, but that's me, and I bought it because I believed I could take the basic Massey and turn it into a really strong stock puller. I don't make my living with tractors now, although I used to. My best suggestion is to buy the tractor you want. If it's the 20 hp 4wd then you should consider that as your first choice. As for the 85 parts, so far everything I've looked for, I've found.

Mike what part of the country do you live in? And what kind of parts have you found and where? New or salvage? My dads 85 needs a exhaust manifold and haven't had any luck. he bought this from the original owner. From this sight we have now found through the serial number that it is not a '61 but a '59. The person he bought it from gave him all service records. Is it possible he just forgot or was it possible this was bought new in '61 but made in '59? Is this common? Thanks to all who have answered!!!

Douglas: Let me take this one at a time. I'm in NC.I've found a combination of new and used. Found new bearings, used original front hub (my 85 had 1 aftermarket front hub, original was probably broken), new bird for hood, used brace that holds hood open, new head gasket kit, new manifold gaskets, some new seals, some seals that I had to hand cut, new thermostat (they tend to run a little cold), new points, plugs, new oil pan gasket, etc.

Now Douglas, as for the manifold, try Mac Tractor Parts, Oklahoma. They have been a consistently good source of used parts for me. You want to talk to Johnny. Now as for the 1959 vs 1961 question. Go with the serial # registration. If it says '59 then you have a '59. It is possible your 85 was at the dealership for a while before being sold, and sometimes memory fails. You're probably in luck whith your tractor being a '59. That qualifies your tractor to pull with most antique tractor clubs. Some clubs cut off at '57, some at '59, some at '60. None that I am aware of classify 1961 as antique stock. Congratulations on finding a '59.

Hope this helps.
