I was wondering what ya'll thought about a situation I have encoutered on a MF-85 that has been sitting out in the open for around 7 years. There was a can over the exhaust for all but probably 2 or 3 years, I am unsure of how long because I in the process of purchasing 2 complete 85's and a rear half, all 1959 model years, one narrow front and one wide front.

The problem I am having is that there seems to be a possibility of a cracked head on the narrow front.

Saturday, I filled her up with anti-freeze and water, emptied all of the water out of the oil at the drain plug til it started looking like oil again, and attempted to crank it over, but I forgot the correct plug wrench, so I couldn't pull the plugs to empty the cylinders of the Marvel Mystery oil I had put in each cylinder last fall to aid in loosening her up a bit.

Since I couldn't empty the cylinders out, it just cranked over til we hit hydrostatic lock. So, I went back Monday plug wrench in hand. When I got there I pulled the oil dipstick again and it looked like water on it again. So I again pulled the plug and ended up draining about a gallon of water out of it. Then had oil again, when I checked the radiator it was low again, but I was unable to determine how low. And since I didn't top it off Saturday it could just be that it seeped into the engine some and theres no problem, I am hoping anyhows.

My real questions here are, is it possible that it just sat for so long without a can over the exhaust that about 4 gallons of water had run into the engine, and it was just still separating some when I returned on Monday??? None of the water coming our ever looked even slightly rusty

If it is a cracked head, can I get it welded satisfactorily, and does anyone know of somebody around central Illinois that does this work reliably, and reasonably??

Thanks ya'll, any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Brad

My 2 bits worth says don't get too far ahead of the cart first. Yes, you have a problem. Cracked head, maybe. Maybe a cracked block, maybe just a gasket too. The water will set at the bottom of the pan and ALL of the oil will be above it. Not much chance of it "seperating later". You want to be sure without major work, drain the oil, leave the plug out and fill the radiator again. If it goes down at all, bingo.
