What should the operating temperature for my 285 be under load? (running a disc mower, pulling big bushog) someone has changed the gauge and the manual doesn't have an actual number for what the temperature should be.

Sounds like a sticking thermostat , only kicks in when good and hot , a good one to replace . Happened to one of mine when using discbine , only it forgot to open . No harm done , we got her shut down and got a new thermostat---Bill

Dave, just a thought is your grill filling up with seeds when you are mowing and blocking the air flow? My D-17 will plug up in 20min. so i put a peice of screen wire around the grill when mowing

thanks Bill
sounds like I may need a new thermostat.
the thing that got me wondering is the fact that no matter what I'm doing in the way of baling, discing, raking etc. it never climbs above 180, but if I am mowing it runs up to about 230, then settles down and runs about 200-210 I had no idea of what it needs to run at. I am running the rpms higher when mowing, but not by that much

Take radiator off and have boiled and rodded out AND a new thermostat. We have a dog-ged 285, and these items were the best money we've had to throw away on this tractor. Make sure the belt is on the water pump, and you can probably toss the guage away. Ours came with a gauge that only has a little red dot way over to the left where it generally runs summer and winter. No numbers at all.
I need help figuring how to do away with over-run clutch when we tear the trans down and bolt the multi-power permanantly into hi.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanx; Tom
