can anyone tell me if the voltage output should fluctuate on the Delco-Remy alternator on an MF35 ? At an idle the voltage drops as low as 3-4 volts d.c but rises to 15-16vdc with higher RPM's. Is this normal or do I need an alternator? Thanks in advance. Chris

Where is the voltage regulator in the system? I was measuring voltage directly from the Alernator.

Chris,
If your tractor truly has an alternator, then it has been retrofitted. Most of those jobs were done with Delco alternators with internal regulators. If that is the case, the unit will have to be removed and bench tested for proper operation. They are simple to fix if anything is wrong. If your tractor has a generator (all of them had generators up till about 1970), then the regulator is on the bracket UNDER the battery. It's a real bear to get to. What ever the case, you do have a regulator problem of some kind.
Good Luck and God Bless,
Tommy

Your voltage regulator should cut out when the charging voltage gets to below 11-12 volts. This is a function of the reverse current relay within the voltage regulator. You should never see any less that that anywhere in the system except while starting. Also I believe that your voltage is going too high. Max should not be higher than about 14.5 volts. You can replace the regulator with a new unit for about $30 dollars.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesnt this tractor have a generator and not an alternator ? If i am correct, it sounds like your genny is poling. Pull the armature out & check the brushes & also have a look to see if the bushing in the back housing where the shaft sits is worn out of round. Dont tighten the belt too tight when re-installing as this causes the rear of the genny to have off center pressure on the shaft & will wear out the pressed in bush. It's a shame that a bearing wasnt installed in the back to prevent this happening.
