The local dealer has new 231s Masseys with a rebate on then. The out the door price is 11,400 plus tax. Is this a good price? I am in Alabama. Are these tractors worth having for a weekend farmer with little mechanical abilities ?

Never had one, but the engine is the same 3 cylinder Perkins as back in the days of the 35, and they were highly regarded then, and likely still are. I've seen them on small air compressors and welders and they work real well. As for the rest of the tractor, it looks a lot like the old 35, except for the sheet metal. Could you maybe lease one for a year to get a feel for it? They're made in Turkey by Uzel, but since the Ferguson design started out in 1939 as the Ford-Ferguson 9N,and evolved through the 8N, then Ferguson TE and TO series ending up with the MF35 and then the 231S, the design is well proven.

I have had one since mid Oct.,2001. Have 70 hrs. on it now and have been well satisfied. Great on fuel, very strong on power and will turn on a dime. I Use a 6 ft. bushhog, 20 disc harrow, and 6ft roll-over with no problem. I traded in a MF 250 and except for the dry brakes on the 231S, I like it better. That is a good price if you need a tractor.
