I just dropped of generator/reg & starter at Tucson Alternator Exchange. The ornary beast
behind the counter said should be about 250 to rebuild both. Should I have these units converted to 12 volt. What else, besides the ignition coil would have to change? What's involved with converting a generator and starter like what came on these PAcers?
To tell the truth.. I don't even know if this
tractor is set for 6 or 12 volts. Any easy way to tell?
Thanks, Bob

DO NOT CONVERT. A 6 VOLT GROUP 1 BATTERY THAT GOES IN IT HAS MORE COLD CRANKING AMPS THAN MOST 12 VOLTS. YOUR 12 VOLT WILL ONLY TURN IT OVER FASTER, BUT NOT NEAR AS LONG. GET A 6 VOLT THAT HAS 585 COLD CRANKING AMPS. AS LONG AS YOUR TRACTOER HAS GOOD POINTS AND PLUGS (AND SET RIGHT GAP) IT WILL DO YOU A BETTER JOB. BESIDE THAT YOU WILL TAKE THE RESALE PRICE DOWN ON IT IF YOU GO TO 12 VOLT. GO TO A TRACTOR SUPPLY STORE (TSC) AND GET YOU A GOOD BATTERY, THAT IS THE BEST PLACE I HAVE FOUND. GOOD LUCK

I just picked up the two units. The builder took alot of pride during the refurbish. They stamped
and marked them to resemble new after painting. Thanks you for the personal emails on this item.
FYI i pid 262 US dollars to refurbish the two units. 62$ of that was a Now Old Stock regulator.

I know some of the bigger Massey 3-digit tractors from around that time had 12 volt (with generators) from the factory but I imagine the smaller ones were still running 6V. The ID tag on the generator itself might say 12 or 6 volt. If in fact it is a 6-volt system, I would suggest leaving it at 6 volt. I've done 4 tractors and left them all 6 volt and they start and run fine and truthfully I see no need for the conversion (especially to an alternator which somehow doesn't look right to me). That price of $250 seems awfully steep ... you could probably get a shop rebuilt one for far less, maybe check some of the suppliers who advertise here. As far as the starter goes, if it is a 6 volt starter, it will be fine if you convert to 12 volt. The old 6V starters were built heavy-duty and 12 volts won't hurt them as long as you don't overwork the starters too much or for too long a period at once.

Hi Bob, If I were in your position, I would NOT change the tractor to 12 volt! I have a Ford 8n that was converted when I bought it, it works good, but every time I see an original 8N with a generator I cringe, because it looks so right , and that alternator on the side of my 8N looks more and more out of place. I also have a Case VAC, same deal. The more I see of original tractors with that old generator I wish mine looked like that. I intend to put back the original 6volt generators on all of my tractors as time and money will allow. Recently my brother was over at my house with his 1949 plymouth two door coupe. His head light switch was malfunctioning, causing the headlights to flicker. He only lives a few miles from me , so I told him to follow me in my old VW bug and I would "escort" him home. The 6 volt headlights stayed on most of the way to his house and they were every bit as bright as any other car on the road. If you are going to invest in a repair to your electrical system, invest in what it came with , make it right , and you will be glad that you did! My commentary, I mean 2 cents..... Tom
