i have a mid 1970 mf 165 that was a municipal tractor. when the wheel is kept all the way to the right the power steering pump heats up and emptys to where i don't know. the pump also squeals once the tractor warms up which is a separate problem from the one above. i have checked the filter in the reservior and it is clean. i'm suspecting that it has something to do with an actuator valve on top and parallel to the steering piston which may need an adjustment but i'm not sure. any help would really be appreciated and i need to know what is the best fluid to use.

thanks andy

When you turn the wheels all the way against the stops in either direction you blow the pump relief valve it only take a few minutes to really heat the oil up that way & it will burn the pump up in a very short time. If you cannot see oil come out externally then it is leak past the shaft seal & going into the engine crankcase. The squeal could be a steel line touching a piece of metal the oil going through the line cause a high frequency vibration & when they tough a piece of metal it will amplify it. Now & then you will find a pump that will squeal seem like for no reason I have never been able to find the cause but it won't hurt anything if this is your problem. We had a service bulletin from Massey in the late 70s telling us when the Dextron oils first came on the market not to use Dextron oil in the Massey tractors that there seals were not compatible with it. Instead to use the same oil that is used in the Trans/Hyds. If I can be of further assistance on this Email me Big Dean

I wouldn't worry about the squeel, when mine stopped squeeling, the pump went out about 2 months later. When the new one was put on, it squeeled again, and still is. When the dealer fixed mine, they put in dexron III tranny fluid. I always used hydraulic. Also- is yours a gas or a deisel? There are 2 different types of pumps, based on the engine. Mine's a gas.
