I have had several emails in the last month or so from people with Continental Engine that said their tractor run pretty well till the loaded the engine & it only started that after changing plug wires. I have told them to switch the number 2 & 3 plug wires almost everyone sent me back an email saying that fixed there problem. This is a very common problem I have found. As hard as it is to believe those engines will run pretty good wire backwards till you load them. A lot of people want to wire them clockwise & the distributor shaft rotation is counterclockwise. I have done it a time or two myself just not thinking. When I was on a field service truck I drove a hundred miles one way to switch those wires on one. I had called the guy before leaving to see what his problem was so I would have an idea what parts to take with me & had told him on the phone that was probably his problem. That made him mad & he told me in not very nice words he knew how to wire a distributor but he was a whole lot madder when I presented him with a bill for 10 cents a mile plus 4 hours driving time @ $25 an hour just to switch 2 plug wires. I real thought we were going to actually get in a fight over that bill. The people I worked for controled that not me. I felt a little bad about it myself

Don't feel bad. That was just this guys way of venting on himself. I bet the next time someone suggests what a problem is he will look into it before he pays another bill like the one you gave him. An idea to break the ice, get an old pair of boxing gloves and put them in the service truck with you. The next time someone gets huffy just tell him you have to get prepared, put the gloves on and hand him the bill. Things like that seem to always end up on the good note. (I said almost always).

When I was a Electrical Contractor I had to charge a 7/11 Store to turn on a light switch at 2:00 in the morning during a emergency service call! Some of the stores lights were out and it was just a turned off light switch. It cost them 125.00 plus tax for that. Mark H.

Big Dean, You are right on the money. Found this out for myself just a couple of weeks ago. when I had the Dist. cap off, I cranked the engine a little to set the points. Sure enough, the plug wires were located wrong. The MF35 had been running poorly and coughing through the carb.
Switched the wires and the tractor got twenty years younger.

Hey Big Dean,
Just wanted to thank you again for the help with my 135 with the Cont. engine, plug wires turned out not to the problem but rather the points and cond.. I replace plugs plug wires points an cond. the last time just to say I replaced it all. Got a set of extra plug wires now just in case the calves get out and decide to eat one again. Funny what those things will eat! Thanks again!
Gary
