135 orchard suitable for field work?

Following up on my last post, I'm considering buying a 135 orchard that seems to be a good deal. But most of my work will be field work (haying) our 10 acres, as well as general loader work as we build a house, landscape, and move manure around. Our land has a minor slope, so I like the idea of a lower center of gravity. But would it be too low? Is an orchard model suitable for field work? Thanks.

I have a 135 that is I suppose what you would call a standard set up tractor and I use it all the time for running a haybine, rakes, 5' mower and etc. What size tires does this tractor have on it? That was one of the major differences I think on standard and orchard models. Mine has the horizontal exhause which does concern me sometimes in dry ;hay but not a problem so far. I have had this tractor since 1986 with the exception of a couple of years that I had sold it and then bought it back. Great tractors!

We have a 35 with the rear exhaust. It has been on a haybine, the rake, and now it hauls round bales around for feeding the cows. We also enjoyed it on the manure spreader and specially on the silage box because of the clutch controling the PTO. If you think yours will not do what your asking it, well just give me your keys, I'll take care of it ;-)

The downswept exhaust of the orchard model might get in the way if you plan on using a shedder or hay conditioner. Debri can get hung up on the exhaust especially in tall grass or weeds. But, it would be easy to switch to an upright exhaust. Just change the elbow off the existing exhaust manifold to an upright. The part is easy to find.

About the only real difference in orchard models from the standard utility tractors is a downward exhaust, and possibly sheetmetal. I would think the 135 should be fine for your plans.

I think you'll also find the tractor wheel-base is much narrower than a standard 35. Could be a problem on side hills. They usually set closer to the ground with I believe 24" rubber on the rears which could serve as a problem with clearance. Otherwise , orchard models are the same as regular models.

Narrower wheel base, huh? That is a real concern. Can anyone else confirm that this would be the case on a 135 orchard vs. a 135 "standard"? Thanks.

I think you'll find that orchard models are designed to run in vineyards and orchards and thus are very narrow in order to avoid damage to trees and vines. I once considered one for manure loader work because the price was right but ruled it out after looking a little closer.
