I have an old Massey Harris that I am trying to find out the model number. The origonal engine has been replaced with a 230 cu in Chev in-line 6, so there's no help there. There is a number on the transmisson cover by the PTO that is 7407A, the transmisson is a four speed with a "B" ahead the reverse which you can shift into but apparently does nothing anyone know what this was for? There are numbers on the underside of the frame: 12-10-41 and 9172A. The tractor has 26" rear wheels and 16" front. Looking at pictures it resembles a 33 or 44. Can anyone help me?

Those numbers you mentioned are the casting numbers for the parts themselves. The one underneath the tranny is the casting date ('41 year) so that's a ballpark idea of the year but doesn't give you the model. It is either a 101/102 Junior, a 101/102 Senior, or a 101 Super. All of them used the same transmission/rear end and front tub. There is supposed to be a tin oval ID plate on the left side of the tractor but that is obviously missing. The tire size would tell me that it is not one of the Juniors (which had 28" rear rubber and 15" fronts for the standard tread models). On the machined UPPER surface between the transmission shifting platform (where the shifting lever comes out of) and the steel plate that covers the rearend gears, you will find the serial number hand stamped into that UPPER surface. It will be on the drivers left side (near the clutch pedal location). It probably isn't stamped in too deeply so you'll have to do some wire brushing and scraping to find it but it'll be there. Once you find it, post the serial number and the someone will ID model and year for you. That 'B' indicates the shift lever position for the Twin Power feature to be activated. The 'B' stood for Belt. When the tractor was shifted into this position (which was just another neutral really) the governor control over engine RPM was bypassed and you could operate the engine at a higher RPM for belt work. It also kicked in when the tractor was shifted into 4th gear so you could drive the tractor faster than when the governor was controlling RPM.
