Hi, I would appreciate your views on the high TBN numbers used in most diesel oils used today. I understand that emission controls and longer change intervals make this a requirement. The problem is that I have a newly rebuilt, 1964 Perkins A3-152, that idles a lot and seldom sees much throttle. I also use .05% diesel. This throws the old TBN rule of thumb of about 20 times the sulfur content, for indirect engines, out the window! I know that Cat warns about cylinder polishing and loss of oil control when using a excessively high TBN. and I have heard of other older diesels loosing oil control when the new CI-4 oils are used in engines that do not see a lot of heavy load. So, any thoughts on how high a TBN can be, before it is to high? Also what is a reasonable limit on ash? I would like to use 15-40. Any thoughts or recommendations on my problem would be greatly appreciated! Thank You for your time, Mike

And yes I did contact Perkins in England, they recommended API CC , I told them that CC was obsolete by about 15 years and they said that they could make no further comment on the subject!
