As I grew up in a Massey dealership, sometimes the thing that happened was the end of the gearshift got worn, and when you shifted, it would not put the rail back to the centered position before you shifted to the next rail, therefore, you would be locked in a gear. The solution was to have the end of the gearshift built up by a welder, and ground back down to fit the rail.

I have had the stacking problem when a tractor has some gear wear, and I have shifted gears while the tractor is rolling. The solution I have found is using a screw driver to realign the shifting rails. If I wait until the tractor has come to a complete stop before shifting I don't have the problem

Try Big Deans's site "//hometown.aol.com/daustin62/Bigdeantipindex.html", page 2. The instructions were so good, even I could follow them. (twice). C. T.

Its called "stacking the gears" a common Massey problem. If you unscrew the hyd/trans. filler plug next to the steering housing you can reach in with a screwdriver and slide it out of engagement if the gears are loaded you may have to jack the rear to unbind the tranny

Any idea as to why this happens? I've got a couple of Masseys and it's never happened but I'd like to find out just in case it ever does. Might it be the shifting forks in the shift mechanism itself or is it something right in the tranny itself?

thanks guys ill go out and try to get it out this afternoon... as to why it happens... it usualy happens when its under a big load which is why you would use first gear but then you cant get it out. My 22 has this same problem with with some hopping on the clutch and some pulling of the lever it will come out. how ever our 44 special never had a problem with this. the other times it has been stuck, is when i let other people drive it and since this tractors clutch isnt the best you have to hold down the clutch and waith a few seconds before you shift. if you try right away and just jamn it in there its hopeless to get out!

Im a younger guy myself that likes to mess around with old tractors. Glad to see you getting involved!. Im no expert in the problem that you are having, but why not try blocking the rear wheels off the ground and have someone rock the wheels back and forth while you try to pull on the gear shifter. Just a thought. Hope every thing works out ok!
