Rear Wheel Removal Questions

I want to remove the rear wheels on my MF 50 and replace the inner axle seal. My question is, aside from keeping the wheel from falling on me, what are some tips you folks might have for removing a wheel/tire with fluid, handling it and reinstalling it such that the lug studs line-up with the holes in the rim.

Also, where do you put your jack(s) when lifting the rear end?

Thanks!
Bill

Hi Bill, Indeed it is slightly tricky to remain safe with minimal tools when doing this. I have changed my axle seals on my TO35 this past summer. Basically I used wood blocks (6" X 6") to drive tractor on one side to have a slanted tractor to start with. This way you don't have to drain tranny oil when you remove axle.

Then I used a small hyd 2 ton jack just offset under the PTO and lifted the wheel just barely. This is the careful part as you should put stationary jacks under axle being lifted and your wheels blocked so it won't move on you. Then it is just the matter of removing wheel and roll it off down the blocks. I did mine alone but it is much recommended to have a buddy helping with this so you don't get trampled. Once the tire is ready to mount again, with a buddy roll the tire on the block and adjust your hyd jack so you can lean the rim against the studs and get a few started then jack higher a bit and finish the rest.

Hope it helps and please be careful.

use an engine hoist on rollers. Put jacks at flat spot on axle
