Perkins Engine Colors

My MF50 appears to be original in color, yet the 3 cylinder indirect injection Perkins is painted a sandy gold color. The sheet metal is red, grill grey and the rest of the cast body is grey. Any ideas on why my engine would be of a different color? I'm thinking it may not be original. BTW, the fuel tank is gold too.

My tractor, according to the serial numbers, is a 62 model. I think that was the year of the switch to the direct diesel Perkins. This engine is an indirect diesel Perkins and if it is original, then I assume it was an early '62 model with a left over indirect injection diesel in it - hence the color.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill

Bill, I have no idea why your diesel is gold. I also have a 1962 M/F 50 with a AD3-152 diesel in it. The color of my engine is grey. Your engine could be a transplant from another tractot/era. I don't think whether it is direct injection or not would make a difference on the color. If it came from another tractor i.e. Massey Harris or another year that would be more acceptable as an exlanation. Good luck..... ..... Scott

Scott,

Thanks for the reply. As we give this tractor a good going over, I think the engine paint is grey. The gold color is appearing to be stain from years of diesel fuel.

On another note, the '62 model was the year for the MF50 change over to the AD3-152 direct diesel. My serial number is not one of the higher ones for that year. I am thinking that my tractor may have gotton one of the left over A3-152's as inventory permitted prior to the change over. Could you e-mail your tractor serial number so I can compare it to mine? Also, I just received my "factory" parts, service and owners manuals and they are not specific regarding the change over and year of the direct vs indirect diesel. Oh, one other thing, my tractor has no provision for the glow plug dash light, but it does have the newer power steering unit used in the '62 model year. Sort of a '62 year mixed bag.

Interesting!

Thanks!
Bill
