I am close to firing my newly rebuilt Y-91 in my 55 Pacer and a buddy of mine suggested I use Mobile 1. I've always used penzoil in my vehicles but am considering mobile 1 for my Pacer.
Comments???

I recently had an IH engine rebuilt by one of the oldest and best machine shop in Ct. The owner told me of an engine that they rebuilt. The customer put a product simillar to slick 50 into it for the break-in period. The rings never took a seat. when the customer brought the engine back because it smoked, the shop tried to re hone the cylinders with no success. The hone just kept slipping untill they went to metal cutting to rebore. MORAL Use natural oils to break-in then switch to synthetics for longer life.

Bob, First thing is it only stands to reason that a man can "manufacture" a lubricant far superior to any natural made material that is adapted for use to a machine built by a man (not Fred Flintstone) Second I used to sell a synthetic oil and through experience and reading this type of oil is so much more superior than petroleum based oils it is strongly recommended that it not be used as a break in oil on new engines or rebuilt ones. This oil will not allow the engine to actually "break in" or wear in properly. That in itself attests to more superior lubricating qualities as some have mentioned above. Thirdly as far as the gaskets are concerned there are some gaskets out there that will not prevent any oil from leaking. It is because of the material used to make these gaskets. Synthetic oils are tougher to keep from leaking but the right gasket will stop any thing from leaking. Finally the flash point and poor point of synthetic oils are far superior than petroleum based because, as mentioned earlier, a human can design a lubricant far better than Fred Flintstone can adapt one. I through personal experience am a firm beleiver in synthetic lubricants but not for a break in oil. Run it on 30 weight for abount 30 hours or so until things smooth out and then switch to synthetic. You will keep that engine alot newer alot longer. Whew, what a motuhful..... Good luck..... .Scott

Mobil One now has additives that treat gaskets the same a conventional motor oils. If any engine leaks Mobil One, then something is wrong with the gaskets.

God put dinosaurs on Earth for two reasons. First, so Fred Flinstone would have a front end loader and later so we could lubricate ours.

I am with chuck on this .I have rebuilt a few engines in my time.Use a GOOD 10w30 oil for break in then switch over to your synthetic if you wish.I did this on my supper C & my JD60 and the last two truck motors I rebuilt.I don't claim to be a professional but I have been happier doing things this way.Perhaps there is a chemical engineer on this board that will disclaim my experience. But I'm not happy with synthetic oil for break in oil.Hope this helps you Ken

I agree with Ken and Chuck, break in with regular, then use full synthetic oil. It is a far superior lubricant under all conditions.

Just a comment based on my own experience. After the complete rebuild and restoration of my 47 Farmall Cub I decided to spare no expense and use Mobil one. After the normal breakin run time I continued to experience some noticable oil smoke from the exhaust. Several trusted and knowledgable mechanics suggested that while an excellent product the Mobil 1 (or any full synthetic) may be too slippery to allow the rings to seat in properly. I change it out and replaced it with regular old motor oil and after a short time the smoke was gone. I also noticed it began to run smoother and with slightly more power. Now, several tractor rebuilds later, I have swithched back to the synthetics but only after sufficient breakin time with conventional oil. Another observation of the synthetics, they will leak through even brand new gaskets and seals on many occasions!

In my humble opinion I wouldnt use penzoil my experience shows the pennsylvania crude oild sludge up an engine over time. I like Mobil one and in a newly rebuilt engine I think it would be great. True synthetic oils like Mobil 1 have lots of advantages over conventional petroleum distillate oils such as longevity, better heat and friction reduction.

Does Pennzoil still use Penn crude for their motor oil? Some Pennzoil is produced in Louisiana at a Conoco-Pennzoil joint venture. I don't think this crude comes from Pennsylvania.

Regular motor oil has worked for many years in these tractors ,why change now! Straight 30w oil !
