I have a 245 that is hard to steer. When it is cold, you can hardly steer it. As it warms up, it gets better, but not much. Higher revs make is a little easier too. It seems harder to turn left than right. How do I determine if the problem is with the pump, valve under the steering wheel or just air in the system?

First step is to change the power steering filter and the fluid. Use Massey Ferguson brand in it. MF Permatran III.
Second step is to buy real MF manuals - 3 of them: Operator's Manual, Repair Manual, and Parts Manual.
Third step is to check the main steering shaft assembly that sits in vertically just in from of the radiator. If it wobbles, you need new bushings and seals. I have performed this job on a MF-690 but you will need to follow the MF manuals.
Good Luck.

Jim,
I have a 245 and had some trouble but when I changed the filter in the pump it cleared up. Be careful when you take the cover off of the pump, there is a large o-ring which seals it that is easily damaged. Also the entire pump has to come off to remove the cover as there is a bolt at the back between the pump and the engine you cannot get to without taking the pump off first.
